Arriving in Friday Harbor, we boarded a smaller private vessel for a whale watching excursion.
It was a beautiful day to be out on the water, and we weren't disappointed in our whale-seeking. We found and followed a pod of migratory Orca whales that were hunting seals. There were probably five or six whales in the pod and we followed them for about an hour. They came up every five to seven minutes and made three or four blows while surfacing. Then it was back down for hunting.
While we were in Seattle the papers excitedly reported the birth of an Orca calf in one of the San Juan Island pods. Sadly, they also reported that the grandmother and matriarch of one of the pods had not been spotted this summer, and she is feared to have died during the winter.
Once back in Seattle after an exciting but long day, we found that the fresh air had made us hungry :) We had a wonderful meal at The Brooklyn (when I saw the name I said, "That can't be all bad.") and afterwards had a glass of wine at a most amazing and trendy wine bar just doors down from our hotel. The Purple Cafe has an almost two-story tall wine tower in the center of the bar and late on a Saturday night it was clearly one of the places to be downtown.
