This week I learned that Bishop Patrick Ahern, the former episcopal vicar for Staten Island and pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish on Staten Island, passed away. Bishop Ahern was the bishop who confirmed me, and was deeply devoted to St. Therese of the Lisieux - he was instrumental in her being named a Doctor of the Church. I can still remember the homily he gave on St. Therese at my Confirmation Mass. He is pictured here in the pulpit of my home parish, Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish.
Although I never knew the bishop personally, all of my encounters with him indicated that he was a very warm, personable, and prayerful priest. He was certainly very well respected and admired by the priests I knew. May he rest in peace.
