We are continuing to enjoy fabulous weather here in Portland, so after the Sunday Masses at Holy Redeemer, Fr. Vince Kuna, CSC (who is visiting as part of his Ordination "Victory Tour.") joined me on a drive to the coast.
We were invited to join Ken and Julie Hallenius who were spending the long weekend at a condo in Long Beach, Washington. As per Brenda Greiner's wonderful suggestion, we made the drive through Washington (as opposed to the Oregon side of the Columbia) and it afforded us some spectacular views along the way.
Once in Long Beach we visited the "Longest Beach in the World" - or so the sign said, I have know way of knowing how they determine such a thing - and watched the tourists and locals fly their kites.
We also spent some time feeding the birds . . . well, we spent some time throwing bits of bread onto the ground. The birds would have nothing to do with us until we left - then they swooped in for the buffet we had left them.
We took a stroll down the 'high street' and stopped in a few shops. Back at the condo, we enjoyed a cocktail overlooking the surf, and then drove down to Astoria, OR where we took dinner at the Fort George Brewery. The food and beer were fine - but the company, and the trivia playing were sublime.
A very loyal reader who knows Long Beach well, asked if I had made it to Marsh's Free Museum to see Jake the Alligator Man. He is quite the local celebrity and a visit to Long Beach isn't complete without an audience with him. I did indeed see the creature, but failed to mention that in my original post. For the curious, here he is:
